MISSING WOMAN IN GAOL

SYDNEY MYSTERY SOLVED TOO ASHAMED TO GIVE NAME j Reed. 10.40 a.m. SYDNEY, To-day. ) The woman who was reported yes- i terday os missing from her home at Paddington was discovered in the Long Bay Gaol. She had stolen a few trifling articles of clothing for her children on Friday night and was arrested. She was so ashamed that she would not give her correct name or any address. She could have had sentence suspended if she had given her name and address and entered into a bond, but she declined to do so, and had to go to gaol. The police, noticing a similarity in the description of the missing woman and the prisoner, investigated and cleared the matter up. Friends immediately came to the woman’s assistance, provided a bond, and she was released and rejoined her family. Mystery surrounds the disappearance of Mrs. Maud Hill, who failed to return home at Paddington from the city, where she is employed (said a cable message * of yesterday). The woman was living • apart from her husband, and had been bravely maintaining a home for her four - children, the eldest of whom is 13. The t children on Friday night went to bed dis- , consolately, in the absence of their mother. Their plight soon became known, and inquiries were started. [ The missing woman is attractive and there is nothing to suggest foul play. The opinion expressed is that she may - have lost her memory.
