IN KEEPING WITH A GEORGIAN DESIGN

This pleasing bed is modelled on the familiar “wheel-back” chairs designed by the Adams Brothers in the 18th century. It is called the Windsor bed, or more appropriately, the “Wheel-back.” The outer rim of the foot and head pieces are constructed each of one piece of timber bent to the half circle and the framing is made of spokes to resemble a wheel. The design has many variation, but is rarely seen in New Zeealand. It should offer a happy suggestion to some of our expert copyists.

In papering a room broken plaster presents great difficulties. Here is an excellent recipe for repairing holes, great or small. Make a very stiff paste of flour and water and press tightly into the hole, levelling off the surface neatly. Next take a piece of calico larger than the hole, saturate it with the paste you are using for papering the room, and stick it firmly over the mend, filially papering over all. The mend so formed is quite unbreakable. It is not always realised how the character of a room can be altered and improved by the inclusion of mirrors in the scheme of decoration. By judicious arrangement quite an illusion of space can be created, in the case of the small square type of room, which is admittedly difficult to arrange satisfactorily, the hanging of one of two large mirrors opposite windows to reflect the outside view greatly enhances the attractiveness.
