NEW HOSPITAL MATRON
BOARDS APPOINTMENT SPLENDID WAR SERVICE Miss Emily Mary Nutsey, matron at the Hawera Hospital, was appointed at a special meeting of the Auckland Hospital Board yesterday to the position of lady superintendent at the Auckland Hospital. She will succeed Miss Ada Taylor, present matron, who is retiring next month after 10 years’ service in Auckland, and 30 years’ hospital work In New Zealand. Miss Nutsey received her general training in Auckland, and gained the State and the hospital registration certificates for nursing. Until 1914 she was sub-matron at St. Helens Hospital, Wellington, where she secured the State certificate for midwifery. Miss Nutsey. after her work in Wellington, had four and a-half years’ war service. She was at the New Zealand hospital in Cairo, at Walton-on-Thames Hospital, and was in the transport service. In 1916, Miss Nutsey was mentioned in dispatches for bravery and was further awarded the decoration of the Associate of the Royal Red Cross in England. On returning to New Zealand, she was matron at the Opotiki Cottage Hospital. She was stationed at St. Helens Hospital, Auckland, and was connected with the Department of School Hygiene. Before having two years’ surgical experience in South Africa, she was sub-matron at the Pukeora Sanatorium. Returning to New f.ealand. Miss Nutsey became matron at Stratford Hospital, and for two years past has held a similar position at Hawera. Ten applications were received by the Auckland Board for the vacancy. It was decided that Miss Margaret Broun, at present first assistant, should retain her position. Miss Alice V. M. Cussen. matron at the Franklin Memorial Hospital, was appointed second assistant.
