RIVALS ATTACKED

“ILLEGAL TACTICS” MR. SCHRAMM AT HAMILTON (From Our Own Correspondents.) HAMILTON, Monday. Illegal tactics on the part of the Liberal-Labour candidate were among the allegations made by Mr. F. W. Schramm, official Labour candidate for the Hamilton seat, speaking to a crowded audience at Hamilton East this evening. He strongly objected to the action of this candidate in sending letters through the post two days before the elections with an injunction on the envelope to vote for him. This action was contrary to the provisions of the Electoral Act and contrary to the principles of justice and fair play. This candidate was standing as Liberal-Labour. He was a Liberal six years ago, a Nationalist three years ago and now he had been “adopted” by the United Party. Yet at Frankton that evening a Country Party man was addressing a meeting for him. What would he be next year? A Voice; A jellyfish! A woman’s voice averred that people were not blind this election. Mr. Schramm: No, but don’t forget Mr. Coates appeared in an advertisement last election with a request to vote for him as he was good looking. The other candidate, the Hon. J. A. Young, had changed from Independent Liberal to Reform and if Labour was returned to power he would join up with Labour. “But we wouldn't have him for ten years,” he declared. “In that time he would have to do penance for his sins.” After castigating the Government, the candidate dealt fully with the Labour Party’s policy and was accorded a vote of thanks and confidence.
