Coming Back Babv Bun was not expected at Whangarei. but when it is remembered that it is several months since she raced, she ran quite pleasingly. She was verv fresh and gave a little trouble at the barrier on Saturday, but went a nice race on both days while her condition lasted. A bit more racing, and then Baby Bun should be worthy of consideration. Showing Form Envoy was a trifle sore when he did his preliminary for the Kauri Handicap at Whangarei on Saturday, but apparently the trouble worked off after being warmed up. At any rate he was good enough to lead throughout the journey and finish second, meeting defeat at the hands of Fancy Boy, who finished strongly. Envoy is a particularly well-bred three-year-old. being by Absurd from Bronze, and if he continues “to improve a race should soon go down to his credit. Speedy for Five With Owairaka, who had ran well on Thursday, withdrawn in favour of his stable companion. Fancy Boy, Whangarei punters had no hesitation in sending him out a firm favourite on Saturday. Prior to the start he had his backers on the qui vive, too. for his manners at the post were certainly anything but exemplary. He was slow away, but put in a nice run crossing the top, which landed him -in a good position close to the pacemaker. From there “the race was in his keeping, and he had an easy task disposing of Envoy in the run up the straight. Five furlongs has always proved Fancy Boy’s limit, but in a weak field an. extra furlong should not prove troubleseme. Rode Three Winners Securing an engagement to ride J. Williamson’s horses at Whangarei proved of monetary benefit to jockey R. McTavish. for on the first day he steered a couple of winners in Vallar and Bombarder. and also had a deadheat on The Thorn. These were his only winning rides at the meeting. Five horsemen were successful in securing a brace of wins, the quintette being:—R. E. Thompson, Ripon Abbey (twice); J. Cammick, Sunny Morn (twice); K. Gill, Tea Time (twice); P. Brady, Fancy Boy and Wenday (deadheat) and O. Mclnally, Siaosi and Serang. A winner apiece went down to the credit of R. Beale, Mussie; H. Lee, Desert Glow; C. Goulsbro, Frothblower; and H. Goldfinch. Mosque. Successful Trainers Ellerslie trainer J. Williamson took three horses to the Whangarei meeting, and both Vallar and Bombarder were successful on one occasion, the other member of the string. The Thorn, sharing the, principal honours in his race on the first day. This success placed trainer Williamson at the head of the list of winning trainers for the meeting, there being three mentors who gained a double with the one candidate, viz., R. Hannon (Cambridge). Ripon Abbey (twice): E. K. Plaisted (Whangarei), Sunny Morn (twice); and J. H. Wallace (T« Aroha), Tea Time (twice). The following trainers turned out a winner;—J. W. Cathro (Avondale), Mussie; F. E. Loomb (Te Awamutu), Desert Glow; A. P. Brady (Te Rapa), Wenday (deadheat) ; S. G. Lindsay (Avondale), Fancy Boy; W. Gough (Avondale), Frothb’.ower; H. L. Russell (Te Awamutu), Siaosi; T.
