“HIT THE DECK”
LAST TWO NIGHTS AT HAND “Hit the Deck” proceeds merrily on its appointed way at His Majesty’s Theatre, allowing Annie Croft to make fresh conquests, May Beatty to score and score again with “Hallelujah,” and Gus Bluett and liis comic fellowmariners to show that life under the White Ensign is particularly good for nautical humorists. To suit Mr. Bluett, the destroyer on which he is the ship’s optician, picking the eyes out of the potatoes, should be a unit in the Australian Navy; for ’-Battling George Smith*” is a good Australian, -transplanted, with mannerisms, humour and all, into his Majesty’s Navy. This makes the performance of the comedian the more striking; he has made the comic “matlow” into a type of his own. “Hit the Deck” glitters with honeyed melodies. “Harbour of My Heart” is sung charmingly by Annie Croft. May Beatty’s “Lucky Bird” and “Hallelujah” are personal triumphs. “Hallelujah” breathes the spirit of a revival meeting coupled with the melodious rhythm of a popular foxtrot. It alone would make any show worth while. To “Hit the Deck.” which will run until to-morrow night it adds additional lustre.
