NEW REGENT
STAGE BAND AND PICTURES A murderer is electrocuted. The mother of his little daughter swears vengeance on society. Under this bitter influence, Yvonne, the daughter, grows up. She loves “Red,” a young, hardened, successful bank robber. Knowing he will not go “straight” Yvonne sticks by him to protect him. Such is the role of Clara Bow in her pictures, “Ladies of the Mob,” now at the New Regent Theatre. “Red” robs a bank and Yvonne drives the car in which they get away. Police get a description of Yvonne, and start a city-wide search. Yvonne and “Red” are forced to flee. They find peace and freedom from pursuit in California, living on the money of the last robbery. Yvonne is blissfully happy—she and “Red” have been married—and “Red” is going “straight.” Yvonne enjoys domestic life. “Red” hates the inactivity. He longs fiercely for the “racket,” and when he finally succumbs Yvonne strains every nerve to stop him. It is a picture full of suspense, and a dramatic triumph for Clara Bow as a dramatic and emotional actress. Richard Arlen has the supporting rple. The first half of the programme is occupied by the Stage Band Show, featuring the Regent Revels, a well-trained ballet from Sydney. Colour, speed and up-to-the-minute novelty is the mark of this show. The performance has a continual background of syncopated music by the band under Mr. Maurice Guttridge. Dancing acts of unusual ability followed one another at rapid speed. Ivy Towle and Freddie Hodges are two acrobatic and character dancers of much more than ordinary ability, and their Indian Dawn Dance is a revelation of graceful dancing and difficult posing. First-class supporting pictures are also presented.
