COATES Voted FOR Two-issue Ballot Paper Extension of time between licensing Polls Voted AGAINST Simple Majority Poll in the King Country Candidates’ Answers to Questions: Mr. Barclay answered in writing “Yes” to all questions. Mr. Coates did not answer the written questions, but stated from public platform: * I—That he still supported the Two-issue Ballot Paper. 2 That he opposed the bare majority and was of opinion that a reasonable majority was necessary. ' 3 That he favoured extension of the period between Licensing Polls. 4 That he considered the period of six month's between the carrying of Prohibition and the closing of the hotel bars was reasonable, but that an extension to twelve months might be desirable. 6 That he considered redistribution or increase of licenses should not be granted without a local vote. 7 That he stood for the maintenance of the existing law in regard to the removal of licenses. 8— That he would oppose a referendum on the Licensing Question in the King Country unless the Maori Council expressed themselves in favour of it. JONES Voted FOR Two-issue Ballot Paper Simple Majority Voted AGAINST Extension of time between Licensing Polls Poll in the King Country He opposed granting increased facilities for the sale and consumption of alcoholic liquor. Mr. Curtis has answered the questions in writing: 1 and 2—“ Yes.” 3—No, I believe in an extension of period on a simple majority only. 4—“ Yes.” s—“ Yes,” but would support redistribution of present licenses. 6—Would oppose increase of licenses except in special cases. 7—The question is not sufficiently definite. Sir James Ounson answered from the public platform that he favoured a two-issue Ballot Paper and a Bare Majority, but would not bind himself on the other questions. Mr. Mason answered from the public platform that his general attitude on questions submitted, he anticipated, would be tfie same in the future as in the past, but he reserved the right to agree to any reasonable modification that changing circumstances appeared to require.
