“MORE PEOPLE EMPLOYED THAN EVER BEFORE”
MR. CHURCHILL OPTIMISTIC British Official Wireless Reed. 12.15 p.m. RUGBY, Friday. When concluding his speech last night on the unemployment problem in which he outlined the Government’s policy for dealing with it, Mr. Winston Churchill called the attention of the House to certain facts which he thought should not be overlooked if the problem were to be examined in its correct perspective. “Though at present the incidence of unemployment is heavy,” he said, “there are more people employed in Britain than ever before. Within the sphere of industrial insurance alone 350,000 more people were now employed than four years ago.” Britain still exported twice as many manufactures a head of population as any other great country in the world, and apart from population, she actually exports more manufactures than any country in the world. The savings of the people are steadily increasing even in these hard years, and the investing power of the nation, both at home and abroad, is still enormous, and is still increasing. Many of the leading industrialists are putting themselves in far better positions to encounter new stresses of modern competition. Britain’s finances are sound f and her credit is unimpaired. Relief for basic industries, which have long been planned, is rapidly coming into action. The period of paying and of accumulating funds is nearly over. These considerations. Mr. Churchill thought, should alone discredit any feelings of pessimism. The continual development of Imperial Commerce, and mutual interdependence and settling of vast lands within the Empire were, above all, factors of inestimable value and importance.
