COAL DISPLACED
OIL AND ELECTRICITY INSTEAD MINE OWNERS COMPLAIN Press AssociatioJi. WELLINGTON, Tuesday. At the annual meeting of the New Zealand Coal Mine Owners’ Association, held to-day, the following officers were elected: President, W. D. Holgate; vicepresident, A. McKellar; executive, W. A. Flavell, T. S. Weston, R. Lee, W. Excell, E. S. Wight, and G. G. Townsend. In the presidential address Mr. Holgate stated that the position of the coal industry was by no means satisfactory. Pits were working too much short time for want of trade. The introduction of Government hydro-electric power schemes had taken its place to some extent and overseas steamers were using oil instead of coal. It was satisfactory to know that the Railway Department was using over 90 per cent. New Zealand coal. Mr. Holgate also referred to the fact that in recent years a more reasonable and conciliatory spirit had governed the actions of unions, more especially when meeting representatives of the owners. This haul proved most beneficial to both sides.
