KAWINI’S CUP

RACING AT CAMBRIDGE HANIDCAP TO MINT LEAF LADY’S BOY IMPROVES Dismal weather prevailed for the j annual meeting of the Waikato Hunt ! Club, which was held at Cambridge | yesterday. Rain set in just prior to the first event, and continued intermittently throughout the day. Nevertheless the attendance was large, the track providing heavy going Tho totalisator handled £31,553, against £39,588 last Labour Day, a decrease of £8,035. Backers Begin Well A dozen paraded for the opening event, tho Maiden Hunters’ Steeples, Day Abbey and Motive being the withdrawals. The top-weight, Bendower, came in for great demand, carrying £524, as against £349 on Nabob, and £270 on Raiti Hiki. Going along the back Bendower headed Nabob, this pair being 12 lengths in front of King Fame, who was attended by Town Rambler and General Maniapoto. Nothing had a show with either Bendower or Nabob when they turned for home, this pair having an exciting duel in the run home, the decision going to Bendower by a long neck. King Fame was third, 10 lengths back, and at intervals came Town Rambler, General Maniapoto ! and Caruso. Scored Very Easily Several scratchings reduced the field ; in the Bardowie Handicap to a dozen, i Leitrim carrying £604, with £3SI invested on Upoko, who had a slight call over The Jack Jumper £ 3?S, and Air King £377. Kinton was badly left, while Bert Hinkler was slow to move. Abbey Queen jumped out well to pilot tho field along the back, attended by Foreign Fancy, Leitrim, The Jack Jumper and Flitter. Abbey Queen still had command crossing the top, with Leitrim, Foreign Fancy, The Jack Jumper, Upoko, Air King and Flitter in attendance, there being no change in the order as the field turned for home, where Abbey Queen was a length and a-half clear of the remainder. Once straightened up Leitrim came with a strong challenge, and finishing resolutely, got the decision by two lengths from Abbey Queen, there being half a length back to The Jack Jumper, who was third Foreign Fancy was next, followed by Flitter, Air King, Bert Hinkler and Upoko. Double-Figure Return All started in the Hunters* Hurdles. Pikimai £842, being the choice of backers, with good support for Ramblin’ Kid £747. Gold Rep £4Bl, and Mangaiti. £243. Archangel carrying only £l4O. Passing along the back only £l4O. Along the back Day Abbey had charge from Archangel, Rose Arch and Gold Rep, Archangel assuming command as they crossed the top to lead into the straight on terms with Pikimai, Gold Rep, Soami and Mangaiti next, the run to the judge Archangel stayed on best to beiit 1 ikimai by half a length, Mangaiti being two lengths further back m third place. Soami was fourth, followed by Gold Rep and Day Abbey. King Amans fell at the last fence, while Ramblin’ Kid was pulled up three furlongs from home. Mint Leaf at Last Golden Krist was not saddled up for the Members’ Memorial, leaving a small field of seven. With the track heavy, investors placed their faith in Master Doon, who carried £1,194, there being a drop to Miss New Zealand £914, Mint % Leaf £793 and Te Koroke £490. Passing the stand Te Koroke showed the way to Master Doon, Siaosi. Mint Leaf, Desert Glow and Miss New Zealand. Master Doon pulled his way to the front leaving the straight and turning into the back stretch he was on terms with Siaosi, with Te Koroke, Mint Leaf and Desert Glow in close order, and four lengths back Miss New Zealand and Wedding March. Crossing the top the field closed up, •Master Doon, Siaosi, Mint Leaf, Desert Glow and Miss Now Zealand being in line, with Te Koroke next. Mint Leaf had a slight call over Desert Glow as they turned for home, with Miss New Zealand, Master Doon and Siaosi in close formation. Mint Leaf maintained his advantage in the run to the post to win by half a length from Desert Glow, who was a similar distance ahead of Siaosi. Te Koroke was fourth, and then came Miss New Zealand, Master Doon and Wedding March. Fuji Of Incident Sixteen contested the Waikato Hunt Cup and in a good betting race Importer was elected the choice of backers, being entrusted with £6lO, as against £535 on Kawini, £516 on Mountain Crag and £377 on Glendowie. The race provided plenty of excitement. Over the stand double Clockwork was in the van, his nearest attendants being Terehu, Lucullent. Importer. Trouble. Bruntwood, Mountain Crag, Hazelburn and Cureaform, with Glendowie third to last. It appeared as if Trouble and Importer had the race in their keeping five furlongs from home, but Importer fell at the third to last fence, leaving Trouble well clear of the field, he, however, coming down at the next fence. This left Kawini in charge, and he led across the top and into the straight, followed by Bourn, Trouble, who was remounted, and ITollycombe. Bowen remounted, and Hollycombe. Bourn challenged Kawini at the last fence, but the latter hung on gamely to win by two lengths, Hollycombe beating Bourn on the post for second money. Trouble was fourth, and at intervals came Bruntwood, Cureaform, Terehu and Glendowie. Lucullent, Mountain Crag and Clockwork fell, several others being pulled up during the journey. Never In Doubt With the aid of the scratching pen, tho field in the Bruntwood Handicap was reduced to half a dozen, bettors summing up the situation by according Arikitoa, £1,149, the distinction of favourite. Red Day piloted the field, his attendants being Arikitoa. Pale Star, Storm Fiend and Glena Bay. Crossing the top Glena Bay moved into third place and this was the only change. Arikitoa showed out nearing the turn for home and he led into the straight, followed by Red Day and Glena Bay, these three being practically in line, four lengths clear of Pale Star. Nothing had a chance with Arikitoa in the run home, he going on to score comfortably by four lengths from Red Day, who beat Pale Star by half a length. Glena Bay was next, followed by Styrm Fiend. Easy For The Top Weight As the betting indicated, Home Made £1,024 proved the best of good things for the Ladies’ Bracelet, he having a good call over Moy Hall £ 726, Lassau £669 and Miss Alma £477. Ashleigh was the first to become prominent as they passed the stand, and he was attended by Bracken Abbey, Miss Alma, King Fame and Moy Hall, the lastnamed falling. Miss Alma took charge crossing the top, but Home Made headed her nearing the straight, and led into the home stretch, the pair having Mashoor. Lassau and Bracken Abbey as their attendants. Home Made finished very gamely to win by three lengths from Mashoor, with Lassau a similar distance away, third.

Miss Alma, who tired badly, was fourth, and then came King Fame and Bracken Abbey. Lady’s Boy All The Way With Oration and Macroom withdrawn from the Bollard Memorial, six were left to decide the issue, backers going solidly for Nancy Lee. who carried £1,535, the second choice being Kingfield £1,288. the winner, Lady's j Boy, carrying £979. From a good j start Lady’s Boy showed the way to I Kingfield, Tinokoa, Tinoiti, Nancy Lee and Arclieen, and with the exception of Tinoiti, who dropped back, the order was similar to the above as they crossed the top. Nearing the straight Lady’s Boy had increased his lead to about three lengths, but once straightened up Kingfield issued a strong challenge, Lady’s Boy hanging on gamely, however, to win by a head from Kingfield, who defeated the fast-finishing Tinokoa by a neck. Lady’s Boy carried just half a stone overweight, and ! but for this would have scored much | easier. Nancy Lee was fourth, fol- j lowed by Archeen and Tinoiti. There was a fair amount of support for Red Day in the concluding event at Te Rapa on Saturday, and he ran a fair race without ever being dangerous. Probably the warm pace set tangled him. Master Lu showed some pace, and he may do better if rightly placed. The hack mile on Saturday proved to be tho good thing for Komak we thought it would be. He had everything in his favour, a'big track and the going. He was ridden a waiting race, but once he was let go in the home stretch it was all over. Komak may not be more than a useful hack, but on roomy courses lie should hold his own with the hacks at present racing, and as lie is a six-year-old it is hardly likely that he will improve a great deal. During the winter Oscar was quite a good sort of hack, and ran one or two excellent races. His showing on Saturday was sufficient to make his namesake wild, for he never looked a winner at any stage. Perhaps he needed the race. Always was easily second best to Komak in this event, and finished strongly. On looks alone Sciiorr should have been favourite for the Claudelands High-weight, for he was never looking better. Instead he was fourth fancy at a good price, and he won as he should have done—easily. Pie was ridden a nice race, and when asked to do his stuff he responded brilliantly. One of the country cups, if not two, may fall to this Day Comet gelding this season. The little fancied Gold Rain finished very fast in the Claudelands Highweiglit and paid a fine dividend, cutting Mervette out of this position right on the post. The latter went well, but despite the fact that Tinker cut off every corner the mare was not good enough. Te Koroke ran badly, and showed up better at Cambridge yesterday. where the company was considerably richer. Waltzer’s rider endeavoured to win the race half a mile from home.
