DISPLAY OF TALENT

COMPETITORS IN RECALL SESSION DEMONSTRATION CONCERTS With the recall session last evening the judging in the Auckland Competitions Society’s musical and elocutionary festival was concluded. This afternoon and evening two demonstration concerts will be given by the prizewinners. With the wealth of talent available two excellent programmes should be presented. Pleasing variety and a high standard was again apparent at the afternoon and evening sessions yesterday. In addition to the recalls from the day session a short entertainment was presented in the evening by the Thespians Company. The performers were warmly applauded for their enjoyable contribution to the programme. Following are the results:— NATIONAL DANCE, under 9 years. Olive Evans (Point Chevalier), 73 points 1 Patricia Boyle (Ponsonby), 72 points 2 Frank Parker (Opaheke), 70 points .. 3 RECITATION, Boys, under 9 years. “The White Road to the Sea.” Ivan Quinn (Grey Lynn), 70 points .. 1 lan Te Weri (Ponsonby) 2 Campbell Lye (Onehunga) 3 In announcing his awards the judge said he was very pleased with the excellent showing made by such small children. STORY WITHOUT WORDS, One or more Competitors. Miss Lillian Sharp and Mr. Bill Stacey (Mount Eden), 66 points .. 2 The judge said that in such a disappointing section he could make only a second award. COMBINED BALLET, under 15 years. Lodge (Alanurewa), 70 points X Kathleen Boyle (Ponsonby;, 7G points 3 Wilma Lockwood (Auckland), 75 points 4 Most competitors in these dance classes showed sound technique and were on the right lines, said the judge. The predominating fault in these classes was in the arms, as any break at the elbows or fluttering at tho~wrists was not correct.

RECITATION, Boys, over 13 and under 16 years. ‘‘Song of the Sea Wind” (Dobson). Harry Wakelin (Remuera), 79 points 1 Ronald Crawford (Papa toe toe), 75 points 2 Harold Grey (Bayfield), 74 points .... 3 CHARACTER RECITAL, in Costume, Over 13 and under 16 years. Joyce Crosher (Takapuna), 96 points 1 Valerie Cunningham (Stanley Bay), and Stella Lees (Mount Eden), 92 points 2 Highly commended: Gwen Ryan (Herne Bay), Kathleen Boyle (Ponsonby). The judge remarked that a number of the selections contributed in this class • were not true character recitals. RECITATION, Girls, over 17 and under 21 years. “Token of the Rose” (Mines). Miss Rose Lovell (Epsom), 76 points 1 Miss Rhoda Speed (Mount Eden), 72 points 2* Both the finalists were worthy of commendation, said the judge, the winner having a good voice. One fault in this class was that the rendering was too mechanical, continued practice having destroyed spontaneity. PIANO SOLO, Under 10 years. “Song of the Spinning Wheel” (Harris) Doris Charles (Karaka), Avis Hill (Papatoetoe) and Phyllis Dowding (Onehunga), 82 points 1 Highly Commended.—Betty Guest (Mount Eden), Joy Lodder (Auckland), Bertram Thorburn (Herne Bay), Joan Leach (Paeroa) and Hilda Cleary (Onehunga). “Eight competitors in this section gained 80 per cent.”, said the judge, “yet this mark was not sufficient to gain a recall. This was a delightful class.” As the leading three could not be separated they were all bracketed in first place. PIANO SOLO, Over 14 and under 16 years. (a) “Cappriccio” (Scarlatti): (b) Own Selection. Betty Tinline (Grey Lynn), 173 points 1 Moir Tinline (Grey Lynn), 168 points 2 Wynona Wright (Herne Bay), 148 pts. 3 Highly Commended.—Lois Hewitt (Manurewa) and Becky Pelham (Royal Oak). This was described by the judge as another excellent class, which gave difficulty in fixing the final placings. SACRED SONG, Boys or Girls, over 13 and under 16 years. John Cameron (Mount Albert) 78 pts. 1 Rena Geddes (Mount Eden), 77 points 2 Jean Scott (Herne Bay) and Phyllis Gooch (Mount Eden), 75 points .. 3 Highly Commended.—Sybil Phillips (Herne Bay), Joy Branscombe (Mount Albert) and David Campbell (Remuera). cert parties only one gave a selection suitable for a short entertainment. Although the idea presented was good, the execution was not of a high standard and he could give only a second award.
