Obituary

MR. A. G. C. GLASS . The death of the founder of the New Zealand Farmers’ Union, Mr. Arthur Gilpin Canning Glass, occurred at the Auckland Hospital x yesterday, at the age of 68. Born in Somerset, Mr. Glass arrived in New Zealand in the sailing ship Helen Denny at the age of 13, and learned sheepfarming at puriri and Wairoa, Hawke’s Bay. Later he moved to Broad wood, near Kaitaia, where he was engaged in breaking in new country.

Mr. Glass commenced the organisation of the New Zealand Farmers' Union, and at Kaitaia in 1899 the first meeting of the union was held. He then travelled through New Zealand, calling meetings of farmers, resulting in the formation of branches of the union all through the country. Then Mr. Glass purchased a farm at Mercer, living there for about nine years, but for the past three years he had been living in retirement with one of his sons at Whangamarino, in the Waikato. At a meeting of the Auckland provincial executive of the Farmers’ Union last February, recognition of the services of its founder was expressed, and Mr. Glass was presented with a gold watch on behalf of the branches of the organisation.

MR. S. J. RESTON

Mr. Samuel James Reston, who died at his home in Sunnyvale Road, Remuera, on Monday at the age of 83, arrived in New Zealand in the ship John Taylor in 1853 with his father, who was the first Governor oC the Lyttelton Gaol. Mr. Reston spent the earlier part of his life on various goldfields, but he afterwards took up farming in the Lower Waikato. For the past 13 years he had been living in retirement in Remuera. Mr. Reston is survived by his wife, two sons, Mr. R. Reston, of Auckland, and Mr. T. Reston, of Te Hoe, and four daughters. Miss K. Reston. of Napier, Miss R. Reston, of Auckland. Mrs. G. Campbell, of Remuera, and Mrs. W. Marks, of Mount Eden.

MR. E. N. BOULT

A resident of Whangarei for many years. Mr. Edward Norton Boult, died at Whangarei on Tuesday afternoon at the age of 84. Born in Norfolk, Mr. Boult came to New Zealand with his parents when a young man. He was a member of the old Whangarei Town Board. He was an enthusiastic yachtsman, and sailed small boats to big yachts. Seabird and Ngahau. and the launch Kokiri. in which he was a well-known cruiser on the east coast of North Auckland. Mr.. Boult is survived by his wife and two sons.

MRS. A. SUTHERLAND

The death occurred 4t Papakura on Monday of Mrs. Annie Sutherland, widow of the late Mr. Hugh Sutherland, at the age of BG. Both Mr. and Mrs. Sutherland were members of families which came to New Zealand from Nova Scotia, and founded the Waipu settlement. Mrs. Sutherland came to the Dominion ith her parents in the ship Ellen Louise, in 1859, and in ISGS she married Mr. Sutherland at Waipu. After spending five years at Waipu, they moved to Clevedon, where they were prominent settlers. Mrs. Sutherland spent 56 years there, but IS months ago she moved to Papakura. Mr. Sutherland died 14 years ago. Mrs. Sutherland is survived by six sons and five daughters. There are 48 grandchildren, and 12 great-grand-children.
