SPRINTERS IN WORK HUNTERS SCHOOLED (Special to THE SUN) PALMERSTON X., Monday. With plenty of meetings to engage their attention in the near future, Awapuni mentors ore commencing to send their charges along, and there was an air of briskness about training operations yesterday morning. A team of seven horses is due to compete at Hastings, but the majority are waiting for Marton and Wanganui. Lin Arlington, who will in all probability be found in at Dannevirke, was sent along over half a mile. T. ! Metcalf being in the saddle. The Acre gelding left the last three furlongs behind in 43>.. With present track conditions prevailing at Dannevirke ho -should run well. Redbank (E. Stratton) had the hunter Scrap Iron (Mellia's as a companion over a round on the grass proper. The former is now carrying a racy appearance, while his companion showed promise at the Manawatu Point-to-point Steeplechase when he scored in the Kiwitea Light-weight over 2& miles. Inflame (T. Metcalf). Disrank (Rigney) and Cold Air (R. Reed) were associated in a scamper over half a mile. Inflame was smartest to begin and he hung on better than usual to pass the post with a good two lengths advantage in 54£, the other pair finishing on terms. Inflame has the best performances to his credit, but has done the greater racing. Promising Hacks Holus Bolus (R. J. Mackie) and Keddar (Metcalf) recorded an excel -
lent performance when they ran five furlongs in 1.7, the former having a shade the better of things at the I journey’s end. The gallop was carried out on the grass proper, the trestles being out in the middle of the course. Dobbin (R. Reed) and Patearoa (Metcalf) were partners over five furlongs, but they were not asked to ex- i tend themselves. The chestnut son of Quin Abbey has not been up a great ! time, but Patearoa looks ready to j race prominently. Kilmiss, the stable companion of the aforementioned pair. j was restricted to easy work on the j sand. Her visit to Riccarton was not J altogether fruitless. Good Ones Back Blimp, Crown Area and Pangolin were three members of G. New’s team out at work on the plough. The firstnamed pair are steadily assuming racing shape, but they will hardly be ready for some little time. Pangolin, who secured a first, a second and a third at Riccarton, is in great order at present and the racing does not appear to have lightened him up to any extent. Two novice members from J. Kelly’s stable in the Rangitero gelding Valuator and the Kilbroney gelding Kilorell were given easy tasks on the plough. Both show distinct promise and with a little racing into them the pair should be heard from. Jiu Jazz, a half-sister to Ring Boy who was recently sold to an Australian sportsman, had as a companion in a working gallop the Quin Abbey gelding I-lats Off, the Tribulation representative gaining an advantage in the run home. F- R. Waller, who won the open steeples on the final day at Riccarton with Rangi Sarto, is at present handling a very tractable two-year-old by Acie from Absurdity. Tfle dam was by Absurd—Liquify, and accordingly is a full-sister to Deluge. In The Classics The Paper Money filly ' Moutoa lreasury, continues to do well in her track work and she should not be long in opening her account this season. Although she appears to be on 1 the small side, she is nevertheless a compact sort. Ca P^ ain ,_ Wai Blanche) and Tiouble (E. Stratton) were sent a fonris blinds over the steeplechase fences, taking the single brush and tne hen coop which are positioned along from the straight seven-furlong post prior to coming on to the course pioper They kept together throughout taking the fences like a pair of dual hunters. 1 or Skyrider and Kilia, with the same horseman up, were sent over the battens on the inner grass. The former ?®f. otla -t ed her fences the better, but KUia showed plenty of pace on the i
