B?-itish Cars Win International Test

In two classic international tests, British cars have beaten all comers recently at Le Mans (France), and on August 18 in the gruelling Tourist Trophy race staged at Ards, near Bel. fast. Seven nations competed over the Ards circuit, a triangular course very bad corners, and the fact that 44 cars, all of standard makes, started, and . only 12 finished, illustrates the nature of the test. British care, driven by Don Young and Cushman, came first and second, while Malcolm Campbell’s Bugatti burst into fiames when he seemed well placed to win. Viscount Curzon, doing 100 miles an hour on the straight stretches, had completed half the distance at an average speed of 71 miles an hour, when his car also caught fire. CAMPBELL’S LOSS Campbell, who tried to extinguish the blaze, had to be dragged away by 10 men. He said he had put everything he knew into the engine, and, it not being insured, had lost £1,500. Young, after covering two-thirds of the course, wrested the lead from an Alvis driven by Purdy, who later retired owing to engine trouble. Taking corners at a tremendous pace. Young entered the last lap 37 seconds in the lead from Cushman, who was making a magnificent effort. The two cars simply flew down the slight descent to the finishing post, with Young getting home a narrow first. He averag'd 64.06 miles an hour, and Cushman 64.02. All the cars had full touring equipment, and raced under a handicap based on distance and weight. Young-was formerly a famous motorcyclist.

Vauxhall, Ltd., of England, manufacturers of well-known British motor vehicles, has placed an order with Lycoming Manufacturing Company of Williamsport, Pa., subsidiary of the Auburn Automobile Company, for motors, to be delivered as soon .is possible.
