ENGLISH LEAGUERS SAY “AU REVOIR”

DEPARTURE FROM N.Z.

BRIGHT SCENES ON WHARF

Massed together on the lower deck singing “England” and numerous others of their favourite Homeland numbers, the English League team bade farewell to Maorilnnd, when they sailed by the Niagara for Vancouver this morning. It was Indeed a treat to witness the scene at the Prince’s Wharf as the steamer pulled out. Thousands of streamers swung from the ship to the wharf-side, where a large and enthusiastic crowd assembled to bid “cherio” to one of the finest bands of footballers that ever toured the Dominion. Songs and cheers rent the air, and a more pleasing send-off to any visiting team could not be expected. That the tour of the Englishmen has done much for the League Rugby code, financially as well as certainly placing New Zealand well upcn the map, is evident. Out of the three test matches played, there was but a mere difference, in all, of five points, while from the financial point of view Mr. Hutchins, secretary-manager of the English team, cabled £ 1,500 Home early in the Dominion tour. This morning Mr. Nelson Culpan. treasurer of the council of the New Zealand League, announced the following official figures of the tour:

In round figures, the total takings amounted to £6,454, the English League’s share of this amounting to £3,782. Last evening a function was arranged for the English team, when Mr. James Gleeson presented the manager. Air. E. Osborne, with a handsome cup valued at £SO, which he himself had given to the team winning the “ashes.” The two managers, Messrs. Osborne and Hutchins, received miniatures of the big cup, while Jonathan Parkin, the | captain of the team, was presented with the Ambassadors Cup.
