NATIONAL PROBLEM

WANGANUI RIVER SERVICE SHOULD GOVERNMENT CONTROL? (From Our Own Correspondent) TAUMARUNUI, Friday. The Taumarunui Borough Council has passed a resolution strongly objecting to the Wanganui River service being taken over and operated by the River Trust, as it considers the matter is of national importance, and should be run by the Government in conjunction with the railways, in the special interest of the tourist traffic. The River Trust has the power to strike a rate over the Borough of Taumarunui, to aid in running the service, while at the same time the Taumarunui and Kaitieke Counties are not liable to be rated. This is considered a most unfair position, as all are directly concerned in the river traffic. After the council had fully discussed the matter the following motion by Cr. C. A. Boles, seconded by Cr. S. R. Dryland. was carried: “Wanganui River Trust Service: That this council takes strong exception to the Wanganui River Trust operating a tourist service on the Wanganui River, as it considers this is a national problem, and it is the duty of the Government to control.” The resolution will be presented to the proper authorities.
