NUMBER CLOTH REFORM

ATR. N. WADE, a prominent member of the Auckland Trotting Club’s committee, is endeavouring to improve on the present system of numbering horses by means of the saddle cloth... At Alexandra Park yesterday Mr. Wade, in company with Mr. Magee, the trotting goods specialist of Epsom, demonstrated the new idea, which consists of a leather contrivance affixed to portion of the horse’s gear and the sulky shaft. Those who saw the proposed new number signal yesterday were ready immediately to acclaim it an improvement on the saddle-cloth system. Drivers found it simple and quick of adjustment. and after accepting one or two suggestions for minor improvements, Mr. Wade’s scheme should prove acceptable to the public as well as the reinsmen. The white figures stand out in bold relief on the black leather, and there is no fear of the placard curiing or becoming indistinguishable, as so often happens with the flimsy saddle cloth. If the reform is adopted by the Auckland Club, the use of the new number pad will soon become general throughout the Dominion.
