"TRY TO THINK BIG”

INSPIRATION OF PAST CANON ARCHDALL’S ADVICE “One of the soundest things in this modern life of change and disaster is schools such as this,”' said Canon Archdall, headmaster of King’s College, at a reunion service in the College chapel yesterday morning. “The best tonic for drooping spirits is to look back to the past, viewing the good and the evil,” he continued. “Just as the Israelites did, the old boys of the school could look back to the rock where they were hewn and shaped—their old school. “The present was an age dominated by cash values. The second evil, the outward show of worldly pride, was ever present, while as regards war, the present was a period of loss and disaster. Many old boys were killed in the war whose sons would have been even now attending the school. It was far more difficult to rear up what had been broken down than to destroy. “Here in this chapel is our Jerusalem, standing for the sacred things of life,” continued Canon Archdall. “It is the bright star in our bondage. “Old boys had their old teachers to look back to, while they could also think of the things those teachers tried to bring before them. Here was their help. Here was where they could find sympathy when in difficulties. “Try to think of something big Don’t think the narrow thoughts and lead the petty life some people do,” he continued. “Come back to regain the inspiration and the vision, and, above all, the search for adventure which drove out Abraham to help mould all humanity. Get back to man’s duty to God’s love.”
