ATTACK ADMITTED
SOLICITOR’S WIFE BEATEN WITH BRUSH YOUNG MAN FOR SENTENCE Press Association NEW PLYMOUTH, Wednesday. A savage attack on Mrs. R. H. Quilliam on July 6 was admitted to-day by William Patrick Leary, who was committed for sentence to the Supreme Court. Leary, who was on probation, was employed as a domestic servant by Mr. Quilliam, a well-known solicitor. He attacked Mrs. Quilliam, apparently with a scrubbing brush, inflicting severe wounds over the eye and a number of bruises. When Mr. Quilliam, who was in Court, reached the house he found the furniture in disorder and blood splashed about the room and passage. An electric-meter reader had called at an opportune moment, opened the door, and found Mrs. Quilliam dazed and covered with blood. He heard someone leave the house. Leary later gave himself up to the police and told them while he was talking with Mrs. Quilliam his mind went completely blank. He struck her several times on the head and then decamped. The Quilliams were the best friends he had had. Leary was visibly affected during the hearing.
