WHARFINGER’S DEATH

CLAIM FOR COMPENSATION WIDOW AWARDED £I,OOO While working on the Western Wharf on December 2S last, Alfred Evans was killed. In the Arbitration Court this morning before Mr. Justice Frazer and Alessrs. G. T. Booth and A. L. Monteith, the widow, Alice Evans, through the Public Trustee, sought compensation. Air. J. T. Sullivan for the plaintiff brought evidence showing that the deceased fell from a staging between two trucks while assisting to unload the Kaimanawa. For the defendants, the Union Steamship Co., Ltd., Air. R. D. Bagnall. said that the only question before the Court was formal proof of marriage and dependency. Evidence was given by Airs. Evans to the effect that she and her son were entirely dependent on the deceased’s wages which amounted to £ 4 a week. The Court granted compensation of £I,OOO, funeral and hospital expenses totalling £42 10s and costs £lO 10s.
