MOTORIST’S MISTAKE
THOUGHT CONSTABLE A “HOODLUM” SPEEDED TO GET AWAY “I thought that they were drunken hoodlums, so I tried to drive away from them,” said H. C. Nicholls, who was charged at the Police Court this morning with speeding. Nicholls said that he was driving along Great North Road when a car overtook him and shouted something. Thinking they were drunken hoodlums he endeavoured to outdistance them, but they caught him and a constable put on his helmet and stepped out of the car. The constable said that when he was chasing Nicholls in the other car it jjt s necessary to do 45 miles an hour 0 catch him. They first caught him at the Stone Jug. hut the chase went on until they were almost at Avondale. “You must not make mistakes like that in future,” said the magistrate. Air. W. R. McKean, S.M., as he fined Nicholls £5 and costs, with a further penalty of 10s and costs for driving without a rear number plate.
