At an auction sale to-day there was sold for charities a carpet which was woven in Persia in the 16th century and was presented to the Austrian Emperor, Leopold, by Peter the Great of Russia in 1698. It used to hang in the Summer Palace at Schonbrunn until 1925, when it was sold under the reparation scheme, it realised to-day a sum of 22,000 guineas. The purchasers were the controllers of an International art gallery. The carpet consists of 15,000,000 separate knots in wool and silk of 21 colours,
