TO REPLACE VILMA
I SAMUEL GOLDWYN’S DECISION EUROPEAN ACTRESS SELECTED Samuel Goldwyn’s choice of a new leading woman for Ronald Colman rests with Lili Damiti, a German screen actress. The actress has been placed under | an optional contract with M.G M., and | is due shortly at Hollywood for her j first picture. Defending his choice of , foreign talent Goldwyn says: "In j Europe there is less evidence of a woman’s struggle to dominate man, to j outshine him in a business and poli-| tical way, than there is in America. ; "The women of Europe still con-j tinue in the footsteps of their sisters of the past, seeking their highest des- j tiny in the home. A woman of that , type makes the highest appeal on the screen.
“The appeal of motion pictures is to the heart, not the head,” says Goldwyn. “The woman who still re- j quires man’s protection outranks the ■ one who fights man on his own ground, j Conditions in America do not usually give us these women of the heart.” That American women themselves I endorse his views, Goldwyn concludes, is proved by the fact that they applaud ! actresses of the heart variety, not the I aggressive business species.
