OPOSSUM-TRAPPING

SEASON OPENS TO-MORROW

The opossum-trapping season in the Auckland acclimatisation district opens to-morrow. Licences are issued for £2 10s and are only good for one man. So far only seven licences have been issued by the Auckland Acclimatisation Society. The three months from Jtine to August are quite profitable to opos-sum-trappers. Most of the licences issued are for use in file Waiwera district, where the animals are fairly plentiful. In this district there are a large number of registered orcliardists who are permitted to trap without a licence.

Rangitoto is a haunt of the opossums. The island is under the control of the Rangitoto Domain Board, which has let out the sole rights for trapping to its caretaker. Last season skins valued at £9OO were obtained from animals trapped on Rangitoto.
