TROTTING SHOULD BOOM IN NEW SOUTH WALES

ANOTHER £I,OOO HANDICAP NOT BEFORE ITS TIME For years past the drawback to the trotting game in New South Wales las always been poor prize money. With the exception of the annual Sydney £I,OOO at Victoria Park, and the £SOO Christmas Handicap at Epping, no other event worthy of class horses was ever placed on programmes for harness performers. But in the future it will be different, says a Sydney exchange. Awakening to the possibilities of the sport in this State, the New South Wales Trotting Club has fallen into line with the Australian Trotting Club and has placed a £I,OOO race on its programme. Probably more than one of these events will be run annually, and it is certain that, if not £I,OOO races, several events carrying very much increased prize money will be conducted. Epping Thousand The first of the £I,OOO races will be run on Tuesday, October 2, and entries for it close at 5 p.m. on Tuesday, August 28. It will be known as the Epping £I,OOO Handicap, and conditions governing it should ensure a. strong field. The race is open to all horses in harness, who will be handicapped to trot or pace 3.30, and will be run over a mile and a-half. For such an event the entrance money is most reasonable, the nomination fee being £5 and the acceptance £lO. If the number of entries re-

ceived should cause divisions, winners of the divisions will run off in the final. Give Game a Lift

Th© fact of both clubs now putting such important and wealthy races on their programme should mean a tremendous lift-up for trotting. Although a number of good horses have visited Sydney, many other cracks have not raced here on account of the prize money. Previously it was hardly to be expected that owners of many good horses would allow their charges to make fast time in an unimportant race, and so spoil their mark for events worth three or four times as much in prize money.
