MOTES AND COMMENTS

PREPARING FOR AUCKLAND EPSOM ACTIVITIES With the advent of the Auckland winter meeting in a fortnight's time affairs are assuming busier proportions at Alexandra Park, and local aspirants who have passed the keen limit tests set by the Auckland Club for the forthcoming carnival arc being sent along in a manner that should fit them for the stiff task of tackling the strong visiting forces. Daring the last few days the main training track has been in fine order and trainers have availed themselves of the opportunity afforded to give their charges some speedy work. When the outer clay circuit is out of commission, the sand track affords useful facilities for training, which is an appreciable reversal of what it was formerly. Trainers are loud in their praises of the interest taken in this important question by Secretary Mabee, to whom they give a good deal of the credit for present improved conditions. Scene Is Changed

U nder the supervision of the secretary. whose long and efficient career as stipendiary steward gave him a splendid insight into track questions generally, the caretaker is effecting improvements that are proving of great value to those who find it necessary to utilise the various circuits. Twelve months ago trainers were complaining bitterly of the state of the tracks and ft is a. pleasure now to hear the appreciative remarks made about the changed conditions. {Western King Is O.K.

An interesting work-out was witnessed over the week-end when the rapidly-improving Western. King and that good stake-earner Gold Jacket stepped out over several circuits. Both pacers gave an excellent display. Over the last half the pace was a cracker end the ex-Australian had the better cl the argument at the finish. Gold fiacket’s performance was a fine one, ttfid the connections of Western King pould not be other than pleased with |h© wonderful recovery made by the wck Huon horse. ffotive Prince Steps Out Recently Native Prince slipped on Slhe road and slightly injured one of his Stegs. but he demonstrated on Thursy at Epsom that he was getting rht again, when he accomplished an tractive task over two miles with petrel Pointer. The latter, as usual, .worked lazily, but the Prince infused lot of dash into his effort. Th§ IKative King horse is a handsome customer and in fine condition. n Rich Impresses Van Rich, Ben Lomond and Undo siert were associated in a hustle over furlongs, all moving freely. Uncle Bert was in the rear a couple of lengths when the last circuit was entered on, but he improved his position at the three-furlong post and was with Ben Lomond at the post, Van Rich having a slight advantage. The latter paced attractively. Great Change Goes Solidly Bingen King, free-legged, and the natty little trotter Great Change set from th© two-mile peg and were w '-ll under way when the 12-furlong disc was reached. Here Master Councillor joined issue and the trio went at a solid pace for a mile, where Bingen King left his feet. The other pair kept up the pressure to the box, the trotter giving a fine display. H© was blowhard on entering the paddock and is not quite ready for two miles. Anseline Full Of Pep

•foe Gee was present on Thursday Anseline and Maid of the Mountains and the former gave an impressive display of trotting. Once she warmed up to her work the Nut Ansel mare stepped out full of pep an d mad© no attempt to do anything Jo© has got the square-gaited in rare fettle and her consistency season will not be forgotten by •her friends.

A number of men were recently asked they liked the tobacco they smokOne said it was strong enough for bim-anothe- said it was mild enough * or him— and they were smoking the brand All of them had some more or less indefinite reason for liking a certain tobacco. Even the Edgew°rth smokers had difficulty in telling y*hy they liked Edgeworth. “It’s a Jnendly friend-making tobacco that - Us t suits me,” was the best answer '-ould be got. “Just suits me!” ihere’s the whole thing. So if you’re * ot smoking a tobacco that ‘‘just suits • ° u -” buy Edgeworth and see if it is Ir * tobacco that you can get supreme tu,faction from.—2.

A Useful Work-out Luvan and All Bell were companions in a spin over eight furlongs and although they were not out to fracture any existing track records, they traversed the journey at a good clip. All Bell revelled in his task, and Luvan, despite an inclination on a couple of occasions to hitch, strode along freely. The Australian-bred mar© is nice and robust, and should soon be at her best again. It was a useful work-out.
