A SHOWY ANNUAL

Salpiglossis is a showy annual for a bed in the middle of a lawn or for a drab corner. The ground should be well dug and heavily reinforced with leaf-mould, manure and any refuse which will keep it free and open. Set out the plants nine inches apart and give plenty of moisture. There is no limit to the markings of the bell-shaped flowers. Care should be exercised in the early stages to guard against slugs and snails and, later on, the leaf-eating grub. A dusting of lime is an effective check against these marauders.
