Obituary

MR. C. J. MITCHELL The death occurred on Thursday, at the residence of his son at Leamington, of Mr. Charles Joseph Mitchell, aged 87 years. Mr. Mitchell and his wife came to this district about 50 years ago and resided here ever since. He was in business in Cambridge for many years. He leaves a widow and two sons. MRS. JOHANNA SIMMONDS

After a period of nearly 88 years in New Zealand, Mrs. Johanna Simmonds died suddenly at Park Road on Thursday, at the age of 89. Born at Edinburgh, Scotland, Mrs. Simmonds arrived in New Zealand in the ship Jane Gifford, at the age of two. She spent her early life in Auckland, where her father, the late Mr. James McLellan, operated a lime kiln in Mechanics Bay. She married the late Mr. John James Simmonds. One of her husband s contracts was the removing of ore. from the copper mines at Kawau Island, and Mrs. Siinmonds spent many years on the island, where she raised a family of 13. Since her husband died in 1887 Mrs. Simmonds had lived in Canterbury, Palmerston North and Auckland, being in this city for the: last three months. Mrs. Simmonds is survived by her sister, Mrs. J. M. Warddell, Seafield View Road, five sons, Mr. A. Simmonds, Sydney, Mr. J. J. Simmonds, Blenheim, Mr. M. H. Simmonds, Napier, Mr. J. R. Simmonds, Auckland, and Mr. L. D. Simmonds, Palmerston North, and four daughters, Mrs. A. Grimwood, Wellington, Mrs. A. Houghton, Ponsonby, Mrs. A. Swan, Hawera, and Mrs. W. Horne, Ohakune.
