NORTHCOTE NEWS ESTIMATES CONSIDERED Tiie current year’s estimates were considered at a special meeting of the Xorthcote Borough Council last evening. The council met at 7.30 p.m. and concluded at 1 a.m. The final adoption of the estimates was deferred till the next ordinary meeting of the council. It is considered improbable that an increase of rates will take place, although an increase of £ 500 in interest charges, and the increased levy by the Auckland Hospital Board have to be met. * * * Delegates from Takapuna, Milford and Devonport were present at a meeting of the Xorthcote branch of the Labour Party held in the Parish Hall. Xorthcote, last evening, and a strong executive was set up to further the interests of Mr. A. G. Osborne, the selected Labour candidate for the Waitemata constituency at the forthcoming general election. HAMILTON INTERESTS WINTER SHOW VISITORS, The Waikato Winter Show', Jhe big event of the year, attracts farmers from near and far. It is only to be expected that the thousands of-visitors to the show present a severe accommodation problem. With the object of mitigating this the association has decided to appoint an accommodation clerk whose duty it will be to assist the visitors in procuring board while in Hamilton. * • * The Hamilton Borough Council met last evening, the Mayor, Mr. J. R. Fow, presiding. The Waikato Hospital Board notified the council that its share of the levy would be £ 4,961, a slight increase on that of last year. It was decided to ask the board for a report on its expenditure on charitable aid. The following resolution, moved by the Mayor, was carried unanimously: ‘ That the council protests most vigorously against the unpardonable delay in proceeding with the erection of the proposed new courthouse, and that a copy of this resolution be sent to the Minister of Justice, and the members of Parliament for Hamilton, Waikato and Raglan.” Mr. Fow said the present building was totally inadequate, and that frequently the congestion was so great that a state of chaos resulted. This state of affairs was absolutely unwarranted. Three or four years ago £ 10,000 had been placed on the Estimates for this object, but nothing had been done. It was also decided that a deputation in connection with the matter should wait on the Prime Minister when he visits Hamilton on May 29. TE AWAMUTU NEWS A Ministers’ Association has been formed in Te Awamutu, to which the following ministers have signified their intention of joining: The Revs. E. H. Atkey . (Anglican). W. Eutterworth (Presbyterian), J. Enticort (Methodist), P. Smith (Presbyterian), D. C. Stewart tPresbyterian), and R. H. Trill (Church of England). The Rev. E. H. Atkey was elected secretary. * * * Mr. G. TV . D. Osborne presided at the ninth annual reunion and smoke concert of the Te Awamutu Returned Soldiers’. Association on Monday evening. Among those present were the Deputy-Mayor, Mr. G. Spinley; past presidents* Messrs. J. Oliphant and J. Chadwick; the president of the Chamber of Commerce, Mr. W. Jeffery; Mr J. C. Rolleston. M.P.; the Waipa County chairman, Mr. S. C. Mackyand the secretary, Mr. J. S. Garner. ’ A lengthy list of toasts was honoured and musical items given.

Young said he would discuss the tion with the Minister of Railways* HENDERSON AFFARS The fact of the hospital levy bsizig £IOO more than last year was strongly commented upon by the Hendencc Town Board, the opinion being expressed that this expenditure should be a charge upon the Consolidated Fund. It was decided to attend the conference of local bodies to discuss the jectimprovements to the value of £Bl7 2s 6d were submitted for consideration. After discussion these were referred to the Finance Committee. The building inspector’s report indicated that five permits had been issued during the month, these including os? dwelling, two alterations, one shed and one addition, the total value £ Sl2.
