BARMAN’S MARRIAGES
BELGIAN BEFORE COURT ALLEGED FALSE DECLARATION HAMILTON, To-day. Leon Constant Francois Janssens, a Belgian, was charged with making a false declaration under the Marriage Act, in the Magistrate’s Court this morning, before Messrs. C. J. W. Barton and J. W. "Walsh, J.P.’s. John McKittrick, deputy-registrar of marriages at Hamilton, said there was a record of a marriage between Janssens and Jean Sterling on December 31, 1927. Janssens said he was a barman, aged 30 years. He stated in the declaration that h e was a bachelor. Detective White read a statement by accused in which he admitted being married to May Lard at Tokomaru Bay on December 27, 1921. Accused was a naturalised British subject, coming to the Dominion from San Franciscb in 19 IS. In his statement accused added that he did not know whether his first wife was alive. He did not tell Miss Sterling that he had been married before. He knew h© was making a false declaration when he said he was a bachelor when marrying Miss Sterling. Mr. Macdiarmid, for accused, pleaded not guilty, and he was committed to the Supreme Court for trial, bail being fixed at £SOO, comprising two sureties of £250 each.
