H. Vereker-Bindon, of Wanganui. THE IMPORTANCE OF HEMS Of white georgette with a deep lace yoke, the most striking feature of a delightful summer frock is the hemline, which falls in four deep points to ankle length. Skirts are still worn just a little below the knees, but the designers are endeavouring by means of these handkerchief points, short trains, or transparent hem, to give, at. least, an appearance of greater length. Many of the newest frocks for evening wear are made with the hem the usual length in front, but gradually falling to ankle length at the back. This Is a fashion particularly suitable for the young girl who can look very demure on occasion.

MASQUERADE PARTY AT REMUERA East "flirted With West and West retorted in kind at the delightfully informal masquerade party given by Mrs. R. Roberts, of Remuera Road, in honour of her daughter Ethne’s birthday on Saturday evening. Exotic, seducvtive pierettes, inextinguishably feminine though in white satin pantaloons, angled for and won the attention of East Indian Rajahs; Swiss mountaineers bent gallantly over vibrantly coquettish Spanish senoritas; a six-foot white rabbit stood on its hind legs and flapped grotesque paws for the delectation of a Dutch maiden who was none the less demure though she used lip-stick and powdered her pretty nose as she applauded him. And there werg. all kinds of others, gay and intriguing in their frivolpus ; costumes. Mrs. Roberts received her guests wearing a charming Dresden Shepherdess toilette, of dainty rose-sprigged taffetas and quilted powder blue satin. Miss Roberts was in a picturesque flower-seller’s frock and carried a tray laden with fragrant blooms. Among the guests were: Mr. and Mrs. Alderton. Mr. and Mrs. P. Smith, Mrs. R. Latimer, Mrs. A. Carr, Mrs. M. Murray, Mrs. C. Waters, Mr. and Mrs. P. Blair, Mr. and Mrs. J. Warner, Mr. and Mrs. H. Gregg, Mr. and Mrs. Laird, Mr. and Mrs. Watson McDonald, Mrs. R. Burns, Miss P. Jackson, Miss M. The dining-room was delightfully decorated with tiger lilies in tones of pink and amber, and African daisies, and the table favours were tied with dainty floral ribbons in corresponding shades. A quaint feature of the decorative scheme was the candelabra, the sconces of which were carried out in crystal beading and pink. When receiving her guests, Signora Costantini wore a graceful gown of primrose georgette, accordion pleated, stencilled in pastel shades and with the fashionable uneven hem. Among those present were: Mrs. E. Dolphin, amber crepe faille and gold lace. Mrs. E. Brooks Clarke, Naples blue mariette, with drawn gold thread sign.Mrs. de Carteret, i;ose du barri georgette. A. Gordon, who has spent the past few months in the town and has made numerous friends during her sojourn. The evening opened with a progressive bridge tournament, Mrs. A. W. Richter and Mrs. N. R. Mclsaac securing the prizes. The hostess served a delicious supper, after which a number of delightful musical contributions were made, Mrs. Williamson, Mrs. H. L. King and Miss Burnand taking part. She was a temporary member of the Presbyterian Church Choir, which at its last meeting expressed through the choirmaster, Mr. W. Thompson, sincere thanks for the aid she had always given.

BRIDE-ELECT HONOURED Mrs. C. Marquet, of Remuera, was the hostess at a delightful party given at the residence of her mother, Mrs. P. R. Colebrook, Awatea Road, Parnell, in honour of Miss Phyllis Latimer, whose marriage takes place to-mor-row.
