MANY BANDS COMPETE
CHRISTCHURCH CONTEST OPENS PIPE ITEMS INCLUDED Press Association. CHRISTCHURCH. Sunday. The New Zealand annual brass band contest opened yesterday. The weather was perfect for the quickstep fixtures and a very large crowd witnessed the events. For the first time provision for pipe bands has been made in the programme. The judges are E. Jackson, of Brisbane, who will decide the test selections, and Mr. W. S. King, of Christchurch, who will adjudicate in the solo events. The prize money totals £I,OOO and there are many special prizes. Yesterday’s results are as follow: C Grade, Quickstep.—Mosgiel Municipal, drill,. 168 J; music, 83; total, 2514, 1; 4th Cadet Battalion (Christchurch), 16S, 72—240, 2; Temuka Municipal, loot, 70— 2263. B Grade, Quickstep.—Wellington Central Mission, 167*, 85—2525, 1; Jupp’s Silver Band (Wellington), 163 J, 87—£504, 2; Ist Battalion (Wellington), 1614, 82—2434, 3; Dunedin Tramways, 116 t, 72—1182. Highland Pipe Bands, Quickstep.—Wanganui, 884. 71—159 J, 1; Wellington Caledonian, 854, 70—155 J, 2; Christchurch Scottish Society, 84J, 69—1534, 3; Christchurch Highland, 844, 68J —153; Timaru, Caledonian, 834, 67—150 J; Southland, 83, 58—141. RESULTS OF TESTS There was a large attendance at the King Edward Barracks in the evening, when the C grade test selection was decided, also the Highland pipe bands selection. ' The results of the two tests were:
C Grade, Selection.—Temuka Municipal, 121, 1; 4th Cadtet Battalion (Christchurch), 120, 2; Mosgiel Municipal, 113, 3. Mosgiel having scored a total of 196 points for music in the quickstep and test selection is the winner of the Charles Begg and Company Cup. For the Highland pipe bands the judge was Pipe-Major D. Mathieson, formerly of the 79th Cameron Highlanders. The results of the two tests, quickstep and test selections, w*ere:—

The winning band, in addition to establishing its claim to the title of champion pipe band of the Dominion, also takes the Munro Cup and the Lauder Shield, as well as a cash prize of £IOO.
