Tasman Flight Relief Fund.—The Mayor of Gisborne has opened a relief tund in connection with the Tasman flight. Maoris and Liquor.—lt is reported that Maoris training for the regatta on the Wanganui River have been obtaining liquor illegally. The police are said to have raided a private residence and found evidence of sly-grog selling. Car Over Bank.—A service car from Tokomaru Bay to Gisborne this morning went over a bank near Mangatutina, falling 20 feet. There were no passengers on board. The driverescaped with a cut across the face. For His Health.—John Sullivan, 43, took a drink yesterday for his health, and then drove a horse and cart. He was to-day fined 10s and costa for being drunk in charge of a horse and cart. Meeting of Protest. —A public meeting to protest against the Samoan deportations will be held in the Civic Square to-morrow. Among other speakers will be Mr. Hall Skelton and Mr. E. Stevenson. Busy Otahuhu. The popularity of Otahuhu as a shopping centre was amply demonstrated on Fri - day evening last, when *>ver 260 motor-cars lined both sides of Great South Road, while their ownerß were engaged in shopping. Mill in Danger.—A sawmill owned by Mr. H. Armstrong, between Ru&puke and Te Mata, Raglan, narrowly escaped destruction by fire during the week-end. Mr. Armstrong's home was also in grave danger. Bucket brigades saved both properties. The fight lasted three days and three nights. Home Or Gaol,—lf William Sharp, 77, will stay in the Costley Home he will not have to go to gaol. At the Police Court to-day he was ordered to come up for sentence when called on and committed to the home ori a charge of being an idle and disorderly person without lawful means of support. Remand On Theft Charge.—Robert McKay Rankin, 31, to-day pleaded guilty to a charge of stealing £ls Ss 3d, the property of R. J. V. Whittaker. On the application of Chief-Detective Hammond, the magistrate remanded the accused for sentence until Friday. An application for suppression of the name was refused. Breach Of Prohibition Order.—With seven previous convictions for drunkenness, Peter O’Malley, 45, pleaded guilty to a charge of a breach of a prohibition order, and with being found drunk. Mr. F. K. Hunt, S.M., fined him £2, in default 14 days’ on each charge. Cheque Fraud Charge-—Theodore Thomas, alias Miller, was charged in the Gisborne Police Court with forging and uttering a cheque at Owhango on November 8. He was remanded to appear at Taumarunui on January 32. The cheque purported to be signed by F. Burling.—Press Association. Crash Into Gully*—Mr. F. J. Reynold’s and Mrs. Reynolds, of Christchurch, were injured when their car crashed into a gully near Hanmer, on Saturday afternoon. The man was bruised and cut, and his wife had a deep cut made in her throat by glass. —Press Association. Detonator Explodes.—A cabinetmaker, Mr. Charles Richards, aged 59, was holding a detonator yesterday when it exploded. His left, arm and eye were badly injured. Mr. Richards was rushed to the Auckland Hospital from his home in Karaka Street, Avondale South. His condition is not thought serious. Distinguished Anglers.—A motor trip from Auckland to the Bay of Islands has just been undertaken by Lord and Lady Grimthorpe. They express themselves as charmed with the scenery. They are indulging in the sport of deepsea fishing, and are making Otehei Bay their headquarters.
