HERO-TRAMP SAVES BOY
CAUGHT ON RAILWAY THRILLING RESCUE ACHIEVED By Cable.—Press Association. — Copyright. LONDON, Saturday. The “Yorkshire Post” relates a thrilling story of heroism from Hyde, Cheshire. A lowly tramp who was walking along an embankment heard screams and saw a boy, Herbert Knowles, with his foot wedged in the points in a railway cutting. The tramp vainly tried to release him by undoing his boot. Then the Manchester express whistled. The tramp twisted the boy’s boot till it was paralled with the ground, and then lay down beside him, and pressed pressed the boy down between the rails. The train thundered past overhead, and both emerged unscathed. People who came to their assistance collected a few shillings which they gave to the tramp, who declined to give his name.—A and N.Z.
