AMERICA’S LITTLE WAR

TROOPS ORDERED TO NICARAGUA CALL FOR REINFORCEMENTS < By Cable.—Press Association. — Copyright. Reed. 9.5 a.m. WASHINGTON, Tues. Following a conference, President Coolidge and Mr. C. D. Wilbur, Secretary of the Navy, announce that 1,000 marine reinforcements have been ordered to Nicaragua. The marines who captured Quilali, General Sandlno’s stronghold, sent by wireless a request for reinforcements and supplies. There are 1,500 marines at Nicaragua already. The publication of the news that one more marine had been killed and several others wounded has caused a revival of popular feeling against the so-called “American Imperialism.” The newspapers are asking why the reported truce has not resulted in the cessation of warfare. They say that the forthcoming Pan-American Conference at Havana, which the President, Mr. Coolidge, will attend in person, and where it is understood he will make an address and attempt to allay the anti-American feeling of the Latin-American countries is not likely to be fruitful in view of the present occurrences. LINDBERGH’S FLIGHT The New York “World” says that on Thursday Colonel Charles Lindbergh was to have flown to the capital of Nicaragua. Preparations that were being made to welcome him, however, were suddenly interrupted by the news of another encounter between the American marines and the rebels under General Sandino. It was, says the “World,” an unhappy prelude to the airman’s holiday. The Washington “Post” says it is evident that the United States Government must either keep clear of Nicaragua, or else deal with Sandino. —A. and N.Z.-Sun.
