WOMAN PICKLED ALIVE
QUEER SHROPSHIRE CASE QUART OF VINEGAR DAILY By Cable.—Press Association. — Copyright. LONDON, Monday. ‘‘Pickled alive,” says Dr. Wring, in the British Medical Journal, “is the only description of a woman in Shropshire who consumed every day for 30 years a quart bottle of vinegar. She once weighed 1121 b., but this was reduced to 381 b. “When the doctor was summoned, she has been without food for five weeks. Her hands, forearms, feet and legs were almost black, and there were no pulsations in her arteries below the elbow and knees, although she was mentally alert. There were no signs of malignant disease, but her digestive organs had reached a state where they had completely ceased to function. In fact, she was as nearly as possible pickled alive. She died in a hospital 48 hours later.”—A. and N.Z.
