PLUCKY SWIMMER FAILS
GIRL’S FINE ATTEMPT TANGIER TO GIBRALTAR By Cable.—Press Association. — Copyright. GIBRALTAR, Monday. An attempt to swim from Tangier to Gibraltar was made by Miss Mercedes Gleitze, the London typist, who swam the English Channel. Miss Fleitze had been 12 hours in the water and was a mile from the shore when a wind sprang .up. The sea was choppy and intensely cold, and the wind was contrary to the current. Miss Gleitze battled gamely and wanted to continue, but she was induced to abandon the attempt. Crowds of people on the Spanish and Gibraltar coasts sighted the swimmer, and were confident of her success They made arrangements for her to land at Tarifa. where a motor-car wa-» waiting to convey her to Gibraltar. She had no difficulty with the currents until the Straits were entered. The swimmer boarded the tug, which accompanied her. and returned to Tangier. It is announced that sh<* will return to Gibraltar, with the intention of swimming the other way. Miss Gleitze covered 26 miles in 13 hours.—A. and N.Z -Sun.
