Serious rioting occurred at Paungde, in the Prome district of Burma, as a sequel to a seditious movement urging the nonpayment of taxes. In defiance of the Government, secret societies are being formed. Police who were going to arrest the seditious natives were attacked by villagers. The police fired, killing many persons. Women armed with daggers and axes took part in the fight. Troops are being sent to the affected area. —A. and N.Z.
