UNFIT A GREAT BURDEN

SERMON BY DR. BARNES IRISH EMIGRATION By Cable.—Press Association. —Copyright LONDON, Monday. In the course of a sermon the Bishop of Birmingham, Dr. E. W. Barnes, in commenting on the signs of the postwar reaction in the nation’s political and social life, referred to the large families of unfit persons, which were a burden on the whole community. The bishop said the movement to restrict the immigration of prolific people of a lower culture was gaining headway. Now that South Ireland had gained virtual independence, its swarming population might conveniently be excluded from Britain. England was shaping her religion convictions anew. The work would be done less by ecclesiastics than by a few scholars. They would combine scientists and social reformers and serious journalists to give a new understanding of Christ’s teachings.—A. and N.Z.-Sun.
