SCENES OF WILD ORGY

NEW YORK’S NEW YEAR CABARETS PADLOCKED By Cable.—Press Association. — Copyright. NEW YORK, Sunday. In spite of extraordinary efforts to minimise New Year Eve celebrations, the people of New York City indulged in the wildest orgy for many years. The Mayor, Mr. J. Walker, issued an edict ordering all places of amusement to shut by five o'clock in the morning, and the prohibition forces placed padlocks on the doors of cabarets and night clubs. In one case, under the old "moonshine” law, the authorities removed all the furnishings and wrecked the premises of one of the most expensive cabarets. Nevertheless, the greatest crowds in the city’s history were reported. The I streets, reservations, theatres, restauI rants and Other amusement places were densely packed.—A. and N.Z.
