The competition for the Walker Jup, competed for annually by teams representing the Auckland, Canterbury and Wellington Suburban Cricket Associations, commenced to-day, when Auckland and Wellington met. Play was not inspiring, the bowlers maintaining the upper hand throughout. Many veterans figure in the ranks of the competing teams. Wellington batted first, but made a poor stand against the bowling of A. Kerr and Fletcher. Nine wickets were down for 98 runs when Hay don joined C. Gell and the pair doubled the score before Gell, who had made 70, was snapped up by Badeley, off Kerr. Haydon was not out with 46 to his credit. Kerr, a slow left-hand bowler, took five wickets for 70 runs, while Fletcher secured four for 17. Auckland failed to reach the moderate total set by the local batsmen. Gedye made 49, R. H. Burton 17 and A. Watts 24. A good stand by C. Watts (40) and Kerr (2.4) nearly saved the day for Auckland, but the innings closed for 183, or 13 behind the Wellington total. Burton, who took five wickets for 60, and Millar, three for 59, were the most successful Welling- ; ton bowlers. In the second innings Wellington lost nine wickets for 89. Then Haydon again came to the rescue, assisting J. Taylor to put on 56 runs for the last wicket. Haydon, who had played an enterprising innings, was bowled by the only ball Martin was called upon to send down during the innings, which closed for 145. R. H.
