HOWICK CHRISTMAS TREE
GIFTS FROM SANTA CLAUS Crowds of eager children thronged the Oddfellows’ Hall, Howick, yesterday afternoon, when Santa Claus paid a visit to the seaside village, and distributed toys and sweets to the large gathering. The function was organised by Mesdames Heron and Newton, and everything possible was done to ensure a successful function. Mr. T. \V. Mills ably carried out the duties of the genial old gentleman. Lucky dips, bran tubs and stalls were in full swing, and good business was done in all quarters. The main centre of attraction was the competition for the ham and the cake. Afternoon tea was also available.
During the evening, the activities were carried on for the seniors, when dancing to music provided by Miss Molly Strong held sway. A dainty supper was provided by a special committee, and a very enjoyable function terminated at a late hour.
In quite a different category, but of first importance to the sportswoman and the traveller, are the lovely new tweeds. Small designs in mauve or a dull brownish pink are the most liked. Coats are cut with generous pleats from a yoked shoulder and there are large fold-over patch pockets. Skirts are of the fold-across persuasion, and obtain their fullness in this wise rather than in pleating. They fasten with a very convenient row of buttons, or a series of buckles. Scarf collars - are better liked than those with revers and a scarf worn separately. Invariably narrow, and on the long side, they have heavily fringed ends, and they fold over in front in the fashion of a muffler. Some coats are trimmed — very discreetly but effectively—with patches of leather, in a becomingly contrasting hue.
