WAIKATO COAL
USE ON RAILWAYS The Labour member for Raglan has been interesting himself in securing Government contracts for Waikato coal. Mr. Martin has just received the following letter from the Minister of Railways: “With reference to your representations regarding the supply of Waikato coal to the Railway Department, • I have to inform you that the department has been able to use this coal extensively during the winter months, but on account of the risk of fire in the summer it is necessary to suspend the use of Waikato coal during the latter season. The quantity used from April to October, 1927, was over 29,000 tons, a tonnage which is very much in excess of that used during a corresponding period of previous years. “Although spark arresters are provided on locomotives the risk of fire during dry weather is very real and is not in any way exaggerated. In the circumstances I regret that the Railway Department is not in a position to purchase Waikato coal as long as the weather conditions render its use dangerous to property adjacent to the railway lines. The position is the same in the South Island, where a similar class of coal is being used.”
