TROTTING

(By

“ABAYDOS.")

NOTES AND COMMENTS FORM AT WHANGAREI PACERS IN THE MONEY The pacing fraternity was well represented at Whangarei on Sat. urday, and some interesting f was displayed. Several who raced prominently at the Waikato fixture the previous Saturday were in ev • dence and speculators generally were not far wide of the mark with their selections. An Improved Pacer JOY BIRD’S form at Hamilton v-. not just of the flash in the style and when she stepped out a Whangarei she soon gave ample proe of this. The chestnut daughter of Our Thorpe has a nice turn of speed uni can use it to advantage and should wr more money during the season. Liteon she may pull out a good effort c-ve a distance. Polly in the Picture Polly’s Picture showed quite good form and her performance in beaun.all except Joy Bird in the novice event would be encouraging to her connections. Trainer J. Shaw has Workei wonders with tne daughter of Child during the time she lias bee under his care, «- nd with a bit more ac Polly will be further in the picture. His Turn Will Come Charming Pronto is racing tatter and it is only a question of a suitable placing and he should pick up a stak On Saturday at the Northland meetir-: the Don Pronto gelding gave two solid displays and was unlucky enough to get beaten into third place in each g In the saddle heat A. Broughton roc? Charming Pronto vigorously and waj close up at the post. By her fine effort in the Cup on Saturday Gold Dial has earned a place among the good second division handicap pacers in the province and it will not be surprising to see the Wellsford-owned and trained mare adding another cup or two to her credit before the season terminates. Like all the Gold Bell tribe, she is improving with age.

Staying on Better Xe> son Tasker has not been looked upon previously in the light of a stayer, but after his fight in the Northland Cup the Henderson-trained horse will be treated with more respect when stepped out over a distance. However, it is quite on the cards that Mr. Nicholls's fine son of Nelson Bingen— Sal Tasker will confine his attention to shorter journeys till the Christmas carnival is over. Not Quite Good Enough Belli nee ran a solid race in the Whansarei Cup and was defeated just because he was not quite good enough. In securing third berth, the Gold Bell gelding improved his handicap a couple of seconds, but he was all in to register 4.38. One of these days the Papatoetoo-trained gelding will get to the end sufficiently quick enough to take out a first prize. Let Her Supporters Down The Weilsford bracket. Nellie Bramley and Lenorma, was supported for the local race on Saturday as if there was nothing else in it. The rush would be due, no doubt, to Nellie Bramley's previous success in this particular event but the Great Audubon mare did not raise the hopes of her backers at any stage of the proceedings. She failed to register tier handicap time by about four seconds.

Still In and Out Concertina again proved on Saturday that she does not belie her name and ran in and out in her two essays. In the two-mile heat the Hal Zolock mare gave a lot of cheek, and at one stage of the contest looked like being second, but Speed King cut her out of a dividend and she got the small end of the purse. When reproduced in the mile saddle Concertina put up a peer display and finished well down the track. The manner in which S. August kicked off with Silver Link in the mile saddle at Whangarei helped the gelding to put a big stretch of daylight between himself and the rest of the field. Half way up the straight the Logan Pointer gelding was throwing out signs of distress, but his rider kept him hard at it till the post was safely passed. Trainer Rae had the pacer in fine condition and he clipped four seconds off His handicap. The first half mile was a merry one and a lot of the runners wore soon high and dry. Maiden With Bright Prospects Marosa. a four-year-old mare by Peter Moko from a Bell Boy mare, looked the part when parading for the saddle heat and a few shrewd judges kept Cutts’s representative on their side. She ran a good race and stuck to her task in a determined manner, and was not far from the winner when the box was reached, and her supporters were pleased with the second dividend returned. Marosa will be heard of again. Mrs. Sweetapple did not have long to wait for a return from Bingen King, whose past had disheartened his previous connections. Now that the handsome son of Native King has struck the front He may feel disposed to continue in similar vein, in which case his new owner will be in for a successful run.

A Better Showing Dad’s Hope is evidently getting used to northern conditions nnd the son of Ifibbonwoud g;ivc a good rendering of Ms part at Whangarei in the final beat of the day. With half the distance covered the ex-Aussie pacer did not look to possess much chance of rotting a place, but over the last quarter he responded to W. Clifton’s call and finishing strongly was a good *eeond when the wire was reached. Roamer Fades Out With three parts of the journey cov- £ r „ e d in the concluding race at 'vhangnrei, lackers of most of the other runners were wishing they had s, tpported the hot favourite. Koamer. the son of Advance was sailing •'long in front as if he had nothing to "Wrv him Then Bingen King put in " claim and Reamer's friends pictured small return oil their outlay, but uad’s Hope came on the scene and the hopes of the Roamer people were 'Wietly pi,. ~, rest . The black pacer topped badly in the run home.
