DAY GUARD!
WINS THE DOUBLE ABBEY DAY ADDS TO SCORE TAUMARUNUI MEETING CONCLUDES ( Special to THE SUN.) TAUMARUNUI, To-day. Favoured again with beautiful weather, the second day of the Taumarunui meeting was held at Matapuna yesterday. The attendance was not quite so good as on the previous day. The track was in good order, and the racing as on the first day provided plenty of interest. Bay Guard caused a mild surprise by winning as he liked in the President’s Handicap, and later in the day completed the double. Abbey Bay was the most consistent performer at the meeting, winning thre© races in as many starts. The totalisator handled £9,744, making £21,107 10s for the two days, against £13,498 for the one-day meeting last year. AIR KING WINS WELL With Young Pretender out, 15 were left to contest the opening event, the Maiden Handicap. In a poor betting race Prince Lu £249, Glenetta £176, Air King £l6B and Venus Abbey £l2B were backed in that order. From a ragged start Venus Abbey and Air King showed th© way to Prince Lu and Bright Comet. Along the back Prince Lu replaced Air King, and Pukerimu improved his pcxsition. Venus Abbey was still in the van when the straight was reached, but Prince Lu, Air King and Bright Comet were in close attendance. Once straightened up Air King drew out to win by a length and a-quarter from Venus Abbey, who was half a length in front of Prince Lu. Glenetta was fourth, and then came Master Lu, Arinagour, Pukerimu and Gold Bart. FLITTER WINS WELL Billikins and Major Abbey were the only defections from the Otunui Hack Handicap, leaving 10 for the contest. Abbess £3BO and Flitter £352 monopolised the betting, there being a little money for High Rose £IOO and Bracken Abbey £ 88. Gold Clip and Sandbag were quickest away, but when a furlong had been covered Bracken Abbey had assumed command, followed by Gold Clip, Flitter, High Rose and Cantab. Entering the straight the order was the same, the field closing up. In the run home Flitter and Gold Clip fought out the finish, the verdict going to the former by a neck. Abbess finished half a length behind in third place, and then followed Roman Abbey, Bracken Abbey, Cantab, Queen Comet and High Rose. DAY GUARD’S SURPRISE Alonsoa and Athenry were withdrawn from the chief event, the President’s Handicap. Gala Bay £378 was a warm favourite, while there was also money for Hipo £284, Besert Glow £154, Bay Guard £122 and Siaosi £ll7. Hipo and Rarangi began smartly and led Siaosi, Bay Guard, Arch Opal, Matinee, Gala Bay and Besert Glow. Along the back Rarangi had run to the front, followed by Siaosi, Hipo. Bay Guard, Matinee, Gala Bay and Wenday. About three and a-half furlongs from home Bay Guard took command and two lengths behind were Siaosi, Rarangi, Hipo, Gala Bay, Matine© and Besert Glow. Gala Bay and Besert Glow improved their positions coming into the straight, but were unable to catch Bay Guard, who won very easily from Wenday by a length and a-quarter. Siaosi was a length away third, and then came Besert Glow, Matinee, Gala Bay and Hipo. SURPRISE IN HURDLES King Amans was the only scratching in the Hack Hurdle Handicap. Lord Star £336 came in for most support, while Gold Rep £298, Gold Rain £263 and the winner, Farndon £127, were next in demand. Farndon led out from Kaitangi, Gold Rep, Lord Star and Gold Rain. Along the back the first-named had a break of about four lengths from Kaitangi, who was followed by Lord Star, Gold Rep and Gold Rain. Entering the straight Farndon was slightly ahead of Gold Rep, Kaitangi and Lord Star. The first-named in the run home was not extended to win by three-quarters of
a length from Lord Star, who finished a length and a-quarter in front of Gold Rep. Next to pass the judge were Gold Rain, Kaitangi and General Maniapoto. ABBEY DAY’S HAT TRICK All started in the Hack Cup, Alonsoa £383 being given most support, with War Officer £305 and Abbey Bay £278 best backed of the remainder. When th© field had settled down Ripon Abbey was in the lead, with Abbey Day and Abbey Queen on terms next. Going along the back the order was the same, with Owen, Star Comet, War Officer and Alonsoa in behind the leaders. Into the straight Ripon Abbey still led Abbey Bay, and then came Abbey Queen, and the rest in a bunch. Abbey Bay came through nicely at the distance to win by a length from the fast-finishing War Officer. One and a-half lengths behind came Ripon Abbey third, and next to finish were Owen, Alonsoa and Star Comet. HIGH ROSE IN POOR FIELD There were no defections from the Piriaka Handicap, and in the poor pool Micrometer £364 was made a good favourite from Cantab £IBB and Orbit £157 10s, with the winner at a good price. King Amans, Ponticus and Micrometer began well, and along the back the last-named moved into the front and led Orbit, Cantab, High Rose and Ponticus. High Rose improved her position nearing the top and led into the straight from Cantab, Micrometer and Orbit. High Rose was not troubled in the run to the judge to win easily by two lengths from Micrometer, who beat Cantab by three-quarters of a length. Orbit was fourth, and then finished Coma and Ponticus. DAY GUARD AGAIN Tea Time and Bracken Abbey were not saddled up for the Kakahi Handicap, and in the betting Macroom £247, Nastori £244, Bay Guard £216 10s and *Billikins £142 were the best supported. Berintliia was badly left at tli© post, and when the field had gone a furlong Day Guard was about a length in front, followed by Tinoiti, Miss Egypt and Value. Nearing the top Bay Guard led Nastori, Macroom, Tinoiti and Billikins. Value ran into fourth place entering the straight, that being the only change. When challenged Bay Guard drew out to win very easily by two and a-half lengths from Value, who cut Macroom out by a head for second place. Billikins was fourth, and next were Nastori, Tinoiti and Miss Egypt. THE MEETING CLOSES All started in the final event, Always £531, being a pronounced favourite, with a little money for Pekatahi £255 10s and Prince Lu £234. Prince Lu was the early leader and around the back he was attended by Catclaw, Pekatahi, Bright Comet and Always. Pekatahi ran to the front nearing the straight and showed the way to Bright Comet, Prince Lu, Always and Catclaw. In a determined finish the favourite, Always, prevailed by a head from Pekatahi, who was two and a-half lengths in front of Bright Comet. Catclaw was fourth, and then came Prince Lu.
