UNIVERSITY LECTURERS

TWO NEW ZEALANDERS FOR AUCKLAND NUMEROUS APPLICATIONS Appointments to lectureships in mathematics and economics were made yesterday by the Auckland University College Council. The successful applicants in each instance were New Zealanders. Both positions were recently created. .Mr. K. E. Bullen, 8.A., a member ol the staff of the Auckland Grammai School, was appointed lecturer ir mathematics. The lecturer in economics will be Mr. H. R. Rodwell, M-A. of the Christchurch Boys’ High School There were 10 applications for the lectureship in mathematics, and 17 foi the other vacancy. Mr. Bullen is 21 years of age and has been a part-time lecturer in mathematics at the University College during the past year. Educated at the Bayfield School anc Auckland Grammar School, Mr. Buller gained a junior national scholarship ir 1910 and a senior national scholarship in the following year. In 1922 h€ gained the Eric H. Astley. prize. He was a full-time student at the Auckland University College from 1923 tc 1925. In his first, year he was awardee the college premium in pure mathematics, and in 1925 gained a senioi university scholarship in mathematics In 1926 he completed his Bachelor ol Arts course and passed the honours examination in . mathematics. with second-class honours. Mr. Rodwell, who is 33 years of age was educated at Wanganui Collegiatt School and Victoria University College. On returning from the war he engaged in farming for three years, bui later on was on the staff of Christ's College for two and a.-half years. Mr. Rodwell resumed his studies after the war, graduating as B.A. ir 1925 and M.A. in the following year Since completing the latter degree Mr Rodwell has been engaged in statistiea research, especially in connection wit! the Institute of Pacific Relations.
