NOT GRIGG-SKJELLERUP
COMET’S IDENTITY DISPUTED PROFESSOR TAKEN TO TASK Press Association CHRISTCHURCH, To-day. Mr. P. W. Glover, of the physical laboratory at Canterbury College, in a letter to the “Star,” says that Professor Burbidge’s statement that the new comet appears identical with the comet Grigg-Skjellerup is wholly unjustifiable. The Grigg-Skjellerup comet, he says, was detected on photographs taken by Mr. Hargreaves at Kingswood, Surrey, on March 27, 1927, and confirmed by subsequent observations. It was a telescopic object only, whereas the present comet is visible to the naked eye as a star not fainter than the third magnitude. Further, he says, its position does not agree with what it would be if it were the GriggSkjellerup comet. Concluding his letter, Mr. Glover says: “There seems to me to be little doubt that the present comet is a newone, though, of course, not enough observations are yet available or . ® determination of an orbit to establish this.”
