Auckland Wins First Leg of Hardley Shield

Keen Bowling Test in Adverse Weather YESTERDAY’S PLAY REVIEWED Yesterday was high day for bowling in the Auckland province, for "it marked the commencement of a great annual bowling test match between the two largest bowling centres in New Zealand —Auckland and South Auckland. But more noteworthy still, the primary motive was to bring the bowlers in these two important centres together in intimate touch with one another. For this purpose Mr. J. W. Hardley, immediate past-president of the Dominion of New Zealand Bowling Association, presented a magnificent shield of rare craftsmanship for competition, on which is set plainly the simple but high principled purpose in clear, embossed letters, "To promote the feeling of good-fellowship.” BOWLERS ARRIVE Yesterday morning 56 bowlers arrived in Auckland by the Limited express. They represented players from nearly every town in South Auckland, right through to the Bay of Plenty, and were the delegates of the 1,800 players of that district on the message of friendship—like the Indians who journey to smoke the pipe of peace. Although only 32 players were required for the test. 56 came, but the extra 24 were welcomed with enthusiasm and accommodated in a game on the Auckland green, and warmly greeted again there. At Renmera, Mr. Hardley presented the shield to representatives of the two centres, and speeches were made by Mr. James Pascoe, president of the Auckland Centre, and Mr. S. Janies, president of the South Auckland Centre. Play commenced about 10 o’clock, but unfortunately, rain set in about one hour later and continued with intermittent showers throughout the whole of the day. Xot to be deterred, the players continued despite this most unfortunate circumstance. p.nd al-

though the finer play was marred by j wet, sticky greens, the games were j thoroughly enjoyed, ending in a vie- j Tory for the home teams. Two games ; were played. The Auckland team was provided with fresh front-rankers for the afternoon game, the idea being to provide as many local men as possible with the opportunity of meeting the visitors. Although the visitors lost three games out of the eight played in the j morning, the total score came out even : —3 51. Under the circumstance of the | rain and the consequent heavy greens bowling became exceedingly heavy, i but despite this some very fine bowling J ; was witnessed. The game between I Walker (Auckland) and Pilkington i (South Auckland), both New Zealand | ! champions, attracted special attention. ; j The final score, 25—4 in Walker’s fav- | our, was no indication of the character of the game. Indeed every head was fought most keenly. Among the ran kand file of the two teams Carson was the most outstanding, doing excellent work and keeping the score down throughout. Walker’s brilliancy : in play again was in marked evidence, | while Pilkington exhibited all the qualities that have made him famous, throughout the Dominion. Incidentj ally there were nine New Zealand i | champions playing, Pilkington. Walker, | Jury, Gallaher. Bell, jun.. Bell, sen., i | Osmond, H. Clarke and Parsons. I At the afternoon tea adjournment, j the South Auckland players led on the ! total points by 101 to 88. But in the later half of the game the home teams recovered and won seven out of the eight games with the final score of 173. to 144 points on the aggregate. The centre of interest from the spectators’ point of view was the game between Jones. Maefarlane, Bell, jun., Bell, sen. and Andrews, Trayes, H. Jenkin, Walker. Both teams played most brilliantly and it was only on the last few heads that Walker finally pulled away from Bell. Bell, jun.. played some very fine shots for his father, while Walker played with unerring accuracy, quite up to his remarkably fine standard of a -few years back. This completes the first half of the games for the test. The next two games will be played at Hamilton in ■ February or March next. The games absorbing the extra six rinks on the Auckland green were abandoned at 11 o’clock in the morning owing to the heavy rain. The majority of the players returned home by the 7.15 express last evening, but six rinks have stayed in Auckland and will journey to Pukekohe to- : day and play a game there with the members of the Pukekohe Bowling ! Club. Deep regret is expressed at the ! death of Mr. Charles E. Palmer, a prominent member of the Remuera ! Bowling Club. Mr. Palmer was a very fine lead and did some fine work in this position.
