AT ELLERSLIE
PREPARING FOR XMAS ROYAL- MINT’S GALLOP Weather conditions were good for training operations this morning. The No. 2 grass was the track most in use, while the course proper with three trestles, about 30ft out. and the sand and tan were also available. Sir Archie was not asked to do his best when he covered live furlongs in 1.6 2-5. Town Guard appeared to be going well within himself at the conclusion of half a mile in 5-}. Whaka King had about a length advantage over Double Mint, with Speechless further back, at the end of half a mile run in 51 3-5. Frowning Beauty covered six furlongs in I.IS 3-5, while Acushla, who was not ridden out, registered 1.20 3-5 for a similar distance. Baby Bun moved freely over six furlongs in 1.22. Piet, with Bombarder as a companion for the last three, covered five furlongs in 1.5 3-5. The final three furlongs took 39 2-5. Serang, Ahi Ngaro and Brampton were associated over six furlongs, the last three taking 41. ONE FROM AUSTRALIA j The imported gelding, Palmares (by | Clirysolaus) and The Lover were parti nered over half a mile, but were not | asked to do better than 55. Golden Wedding was given a working gallop over half-a-mile in 56. Diamond Queen, who was not timed, appeared to be going well at the end of a half-mile spin. Wee Marble covered half-a-mile by himself in 53. Beau Cavalier was givep strong work to the six furlong post, and then came home in 1.25 1-5. Mons Star and Sir Russell were in company over three furlongs, which they ran in 38 3-5, a fair effort. Automne went nicely over live furlongs, the last four taking 52. Bahama took 53 2-5 for the last four of a five furlong sprint. COURSE PROPER The Auckland Cup candidate Royal Mint, with Marita to assist him over the final six furlongs, travelled a mile and a quarter in 2.19 2-5. The initial furlong took 12 2-5, three furlongs 41 1-5, six furlongs 1.23 2-5, nine furlongs 2.5 3-5, and the full distance £.19 2-5. The pair were practically on terms at the finish, with Royal Mint doing it comfortably.. Lord Guy was accompanied by Royal Trek in a bout over six furlongs, which took 1.24. The former easily beat his companion at the finish. THE JUMPERS Glenotus (Healey) and Blue Sky (Rae) were schooled over two hurdles, and gave a pleasing display. JOTTINGS If present intentions are adhered to, Merry Mint and The Hawk will not be seen out at Ellerslie at Christmas. Goshawk, the remaining member of J. Cameron’s team, made his appearance at Ellerslie this morning, where he moved freely over a couple of rounds on the tan. Ellerslie will not have a strong representation at the Taumarunui fixture on Saturday and Monday, only four horses being railed South this morning. Gala Day, War Officer and Abbey Day will comprise R- E. Brown’s team, while the Lucullus gelding, Ponticus, will also fulfil his engagements. The New Plymouth trainer, E. George, took his departure yesterday morning with Mint Leaf, Nastori and Hipo, his intention being to race the trio at the abovementioned meeting. Hipo may be seen on the second day.
Several trainers who are to visit Ellerslie for the Christmas meeting have already booked accommodation. .Those staying at "W. Mobberley’s establishment will include F. Tilly, Wanganui, six; Murray-Aynsley, Christchurch, two: G. Pine, Christchurch, two; H. Nurse, Christchurch, one; and M. Carroll, Frankton Junction, two.
RICCARTON TRACK NOTES
HONOURS TO COUNT CAVOUR RAPIER GALLOPS OVER MILE (Special to THE SUN.) CHRISTCHURCH, To-day. Conditions were pleasant for training operations at Riccarton this morning. Most horses with engagements at Ellerslie were worked on the plough. The Northern Derby candidate Agrion was restricted to strong work, with a sprint home over the last three furlongs. The Liinond colt is in good order for his approaching Auckland engagements. Paperchase was going comfortably at the end of six furlongs, which he ran in 1.22. Over the same distance, Childsplay was not troubled to record 1.20 1-5. Eulalie was going on better than three-quarter pace over six furlongs, which she. left behind in 1.21. Don Jose and Paper Boy were not asked to do their best over seven furlongs, the pair running the last half-mile in 55 1-5. Golden Armour was restricted to three-quarter pace, and Starfiiglit ran home the last three furlongs of his work in 39 4-5. Martarma gave Oriflamb a few lengths’ start over six furlongs which took 1.17, the last three furlongs being left behind in 39 2-5. Martarma was going strongly at the end. Money Order was sent over two rounds at a steady pace. The Paper Money gelding looks well. The Auckland Cup candidate, Count Cavour, took the honours of the morning over a distance. He trotted round to the mile and a quarter post and, quickly settling down to work, was travelling fairly fast when picked up by his stable-mate Satrap. At the mile post the pair kept together throughout, but nearing the post Count Cavour drew slightly away and was in front at the end. The Solferino gelding finished in his best style, and ran his last mile in 1.44. The full journey took 2.11. Footfall was given very light work, but pulled up all right, and walked away from the track showing little signs of soreness.
Rapier and Centrepiece were associated in a gallop over a mile, and. both horses acquitted themselves in good style. There was nothing between them till nearing the end when Rapier drew out and was showing the way to his companion passing the post. The first three furlongs were run in 39 2-5, five in 1.4 2-5, six in 1.18, and the full journey in 1.44 2-5.
